Jay was thorough, knowledgeable, and immensely helpful. I feel the consultation fee was well worth my peace of mind.

Appointment Policies

How We Conduct Appointments: All appointments are conducted by Zoom. Meetings are recorded, and you’ll be given access to the recording after completing the appointment. You may also choose to have your appointment by phone or video chat (FaceTime, Google Hangouts, etc.), but we cannot record video chats.

Appointment Fee: You must pay your appointment fee no later than 5:00 pm one business day before the meeting (if your appointment is scheduled for Monday, you must pay the fee no later than the preceding Friday). You will receive an invoice by email once your appointment is scheduled, and you pay using a credit card, debit card, or your bank account information.

Cancellation, Rescheduling, and No-Show Policy: If you cancel or reschedule more than 24 hours before your appointment, you will receive credit for the full fee paid. Otherwise, you will be charged the full appointment fee. You will also be billed the full appointment fee if you do not join the meeting within 10 minutes of your scheduled start time.

Refund Policy: If you cancel or reschedule more than 24 hours before your appointment, you will receive credit for the full fee paid. We do not refund appointment fees once paid. Credits are transferrable for 30 days from the date of the originally-scheduled appointment.

We work with student loan borrowers nationwide. We represent people in state, federal, and bankruptcy court cases only in California and New York. If you live outside of California or New York, we cannot represent you in a court case and cannot provide legal advice or guidance on state law.

Answers to Your Questions

I’m happy to answer your questions about the way I work so you can make an informed and confident decision. Here are some of our frequently asked questions for your reference.

Lots of lawyers provide a free consultation. You get just enough information to convince you they know what they’re doing, then they quote a fee and rush you out the door. Don’t expect any advice, guidance, or answers.

You can also get a free consultation from a student loan counseling company. These are the same places that were selling mortgage modifications a few years ago, and debt settlement before that. Now they’re charging $1,500 or more just to fill out forms you can do on your own for free.

They’re not licensed, not regulated, and sometimes not even in this country. The federal government tries to shut them down but they just pop up with another name.

If you’re not getting any advice, guidance or answers then there’s no value in that free consultation.

We do things different around here.  When you make an appointment, you’re talking to me – Jay Fleischman. I’ve been a lawyer for over 24 years, and I’ve helped over 3,500 student loan borrowers get their debt under control so they could live a happier life.

When we talk, I’ll do a full analysis of your situation. I’ll walk you through all your options and explain everything to you. If there’s a form or application, I’ll give it to you with instructions on how to submit it. You’ll even get a recording of the call so you can listen to it again.

Most people don’t need to hire me to do anything after the appointment because of all the value they get. If you do need my help, I’ll credit the appointment fee back to you.

Consider how much it will cost you to continue doing nothing. You’re looking for reliable advice on how to solve a problem. You can either get the answers you need to gain clarity, or you can keep on doing nothing.

There are some lawyers who are willing to give you a free consultation, but can you really afford to waste time looking for someone with the knowledge and experience it takes to make your problem go away?

Every day you spend without a solution to your problem costs you money. Your credit gets worse, the balances increase, and you run a greater risk of judgments and wage garnishments. Your stress level goes through the roof, and that negatively impacts your health in the long run.

If you want to improve your situation, get peace of mind and take control over your financial well-being, I can help you.

I’ve been helping people with student loans and other debt problems for 24 years. You name the situation, I’ve dealt with it more often than most other attorneys. The value you’ll get from our time together is far greater than the cost of the appointment.

Don’t trust me – trust the other people who have worked with me. Read what my clients have said about me on Avvo and Yelp.

Don’t trust me – listen to what I have to say. You can check out The Student Loan Show, my podcast where I give out
more free information than anyone else.

My record speaks for itself. I’ve been practicing law since 1995, and have always represented people with bill problems. Over the past 23 years, I’ve helped over 3,500 individuals and families climb out of debt improve their financial lives. In the cases of Torres v. Chase Bank USA, NARussell v. Chase Bank USA, NA and Gilyard-McKenzie v. HSBC Bank USA, NA, I fought some of the largest financial institutions in the world and established that people have the right to an accurate credit report after bankruptcy.

From 2012 until 2018, I co-founded and helped run the Student Loan Law Workshop, the most comprehensive training grounds for attorneys who want to learn the field of student loan law. I’ve also spoken at: Central District of California Bankruptcy Attorneys Association;  Max Gardner’s Bankruptcy Boot Camp; Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Boot Camp; Federal Bar Association; King County Bar Association; Oklahoma Bar Association; National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys; National Association of Consumer Advocates; Maryland Institute of Continuing Professional Education for Lawyers; and the New York City Bar Association.

I help people nationwide with federal student loan issues. I work with people in California and New York on other types of debt issues, including representation in a state, federal or bankruptcy court.

If your problem fits into one of those categories, I can give you the advice you need. If not, we probably aren’t going to be a good match for one another.

Note sure? Send me a message with the details of your situation and I’ll let you know before you commit to spending any money.

All of our sessions are recorded, and we’ll send the audio to you after the session so you can review it later on. If there are any applications or forms you can use, he’ll send you those as well.

My firm is 100% online, so you can say I’m everywhere. Most of my work is done by phone and video conference. We have meeting space in Los Angeles and New York City, and I split my time between both places depending on court appearances and client needs.

My staff is distributed around the country, which means I get to hire the best people – not just the ones who happen to live close enough to commute to an office in a particular location.

Clients like the convenience of not having to take time away from work and family obligations to meet with me.

I enjoy the chance to spend more time with my family. I can walk the dogs, have lunch with my wife, attend school functions, and see every one of my kid’s baseball games. I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

We offer full-service representation as well as hourly and retainer-based advisory services. Our initial meeting gives us the chance to get to know one another. I’ll get the details about your situation, review your goals, and make recommendations to help you get the best possible outcome. We’ll also discuss how we can work together.

For many people, an initial meeting with me is all they need to get on track. Others decide to work with me on a long-term basis, either in an advisory role or as their attorney in a court case. We also offer the option of becoming a member of our online community and accessing our videos, guidebooks and how-to roadmaps.
